2023 Axis Summit Recap

“I was invited to go to South Africa as a Teach With Africa Fellow, July 2023. I had the chance to visit Pretoria, Cape Town, and Johannesburg. I had no idea what to expect, but the summit was invigorating. The working sessions were thought-provoking and inspiring. Other participants and I all recognized that though we come from different places, at core, teenagers are teenagers, students are students, and there is so much we can learn from them and each other.”

A team of 10 educators from Hamlin, Town and St. Ignatius, through Teach With Africa, had the opportunity to travel to Pretoria, South Africa in July for the Axis Summit Conference-a global educators’ conference. We were warmly welcomed by colleagues from the Global Teachers Institute and the LEAP Maths and Science Schools. The keynote speakers and various workshops ignited deep conversations facing the education sector globally. Some examples of workshops offered included:

-The Why of Being A Teacher
-Kindling Innovation: Encouraging Language Innovation With Digital Tools
-Igniting the The Joy of Mathematics
-From Conflict to Collaboration: Rethinking Discipline in Education
-Ensuring Trust Makes a Difference in Your Classroom
-Sparking Activism: Impactful Education Starts With Human Rights.

Additionally, a subset of TWA Fellows travelled to Livingstone, Zambia, to host multiple workshops with educators at the Tongabezi Trust School. The school administrators have identified a strong desire to bolster early childhood education, and the workshops were geared towards building a stronger foundation.
